Ice Rink Considerations

Blog

Not all requirements can be capture by technical specifications, or drawing details. As an example, making a good quality ice requires practical knowledge of adjusting spray nozzles of water hose, along with the type of shoes the ice builders are using, number of persons involve in operation and the skills not to stick the hose on the fresh made ice. Same goes for ice painting, hockey rink marking etc.

Ice Rink Classification

• NHL: 85’ x 200’

• International: 30m x 60m

• Curling: 15’ x 146’ (actual playing surface length is 138’)

• Speed Skating: 400m (approximate surface area = 48,400 sq.ft.)

Rink Uses

• Recreational - Public Skating

- Skating Trail

- Freeform

• Hockey; NHL/OHL/AHL/ECL….

• Figure skating; International Size

• Curling; World Curling Federation

Ice skating rinks can be used for a number of purposes and uses throughout the year

- Curling

- Hockey

- Speed skating

- Figure skating

- General leisure

- Non skating activities by removing the ice or covering it.

Generally, a permanent ice rink will require the following facilities

- Snow pit.

- Skate boots for hire, for entry level + advanced level for boys/girls/adults

- Ice resurface machine, edger & garage.

- Shop for skate boot sale & hire, skater accessories.

- Blade sharpening facility for skates & resurface machine.

- Toilets.

- Good lighting with low emissivity.

- Changing room & lockers.

- Cafeteria.

- Audience seating arrangements & viewing facilities.

- Ticket booth & office.

- Maintenance engineer for refrigeration plant plus ice resurfacing.

- Dasher boards around the rink circumference.

- Rink nonslip matting for rink surround & skate facilities.

- Audio system for music & announcements.

- Workshop for day to day running repairs and storage of rink sundries such as ice paint, spare parts, refrigerant, glycol, tools.

Ice Rinks

Ice rink design and construction is a combination between technical knowledge, construction experience and passion. Rink Classifications NHL: 85’ x 200’ ; International: 30m x 60m; Curling: 15’ x 146’ (actual playing surface length is 138’); Speed Skating: 400m (approximate surface area = 48,400 sq.ft.)

Snow Parks

Snow Parks reduce total emissions from tourism when it enables millions of skiers to ski locally instead of driving or flying to far off ski resorts or selecting another type of carbon intense holiday.

Sled Trajectory and Track

We carry out a comprehensive technical analysis of the combined bobsleigh, luge and skeleton refrigerated Track. Luge is the fastest sport in the Winter Olympics, where athletes ride a flat sled through a course face up and feet first. Popularity is growing

Ice Climbing Walls

Creating Artificial ice climbing wall, that resamples frozen waterfalls in Norway is a bit of dark art. Combining structural, refrigeration and snice techniques

Clear Ice Systems

Block Ice industrially produced (as for fish markets or refrigerator ice cube tray); had a poor appearance, clouded on the top and middle with air bobbles and impurities.  Creating a crystal-clear blue color is on the same time an art and a science
